This behavior won't be changing in the forseeable future. The kernel
module needs to be unloaded and reloaded before X can be restarted, and
there isn't currently a framework that will handle stopping X, unloading
the kernel module, and restarting X in a safe fashion.
The NV installer requires that you stop X before running it.
