it works on a GM965/GL960 (00:02) with ubuntu 8.10 + the mesa patch above (comment 15) without any issues on my side.
I created a deb for libgl1-mesa-dri_7.2-1ubuntu2_i386 from source and added the patch. The limit is now 4096x4096 where it was 2048x2048 before.
