I did do a downgrade to 4.4.2 again and then:
1) Thunar windows all appeared on desktop 1
2) Everything else (terminals & firefox) on the current window
3) New windows (i.e. those created since the last logout of 4.4.3 were not
remembered).
[FWIW the machine was installed as Kubuntu, and the xubuntu-desktop and
other xfce stuff was added later]
