Under intrepid, I have just installed the latest dev version,
0.9-0ubuntu6, using the following instructions (which I'm including
because my comment might be a result of me making a mistake here):

  sudo aptitude install bzr
  sudo aptitude install fakeroot
  mkdir vmbuilder
  cd vmbuilder/
  bzr branch lp:vmbuilder
sudo aptitude install cdbs python-all-dev python-epydoc
  dpkg-buildpackage -us -uc
  cd ..
  sudo dpkg -i ubuntu-vm-builder_0.9-0ubuntu6_all.deb

Using this vmbuilder command:
sudo vmbuilder kvm ubuntu --suite intrepid --flavour virtual --arch i386
--iso=/media/cdrom/ubuntu-8.10-server-i386.iso

The installer still goes onto the network, does not even look at the
iso. Debug flag does not show that the iso option is detected. I've
tried with both --iso=path and --iso path
