Thanks for this.  Since the Intel card is standard for some years on Dell
laptops (and no doubt many others), I thought it must be covered in Ubuntu.
I will see if they have a Linux driver.

Since my original post I've upgraded my video card to a Radeon 9550.  I
installed the proprietary ATI drivers, and have not had a problem with the
resolution.  Not to say there have been no other problems -- I get
mysterious crashes.  But those are off topic here.

@Martin: I think that if you delete xorg.conf the software generates the
warning you describe and automatically generates a new one with default
settings.
