Public bug reported: I was upgrading from Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10 when the system said I had a corrupted file. The system froze up, so I had no other choice but to reboot. I chose recovery mode through the startup menu and it rebuilt and installed all the packages. When I tried to reconfigure the visual effects I thought that maybe had changed slightly and lost a few settings, I noticed they weren't functioning like they should. I wasn't paying attention as I should have while the system files were reinstalliing, so I'm not sure where exactly it went wrong.
