Robert update-manager runs dist-upgrade all it is is a front end to it. dist-upgrade was broken cause the held back packages to not be held back causing update-manager to fail because dist-upgrade is failing. please update apt sudo apt-get upgrade apt than try it the version of apt that fixes this issue is 0.6.46.4ubuntu2. make sure you have that version and please run update-manager again. from the crash report that is the issue. ignore the part about ubuntu-desktop as dist-upgrade cant update anything without the new version of apt. btw evolution was also pushed through you shouldnt have any held back packages. Robert this problem is the same from what the crash report says. i will leave it as a seperate bug so let me know if it fixes it.
