Public bug reported:
I was asked to open a new bug for this. Originally I reported it under
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
intel/+bug/282081 but they're trying to keep that one limited, and it
isn't clear that it is the same problem.
I have: Ubuntu 8.10 (64 bit, amd64 architecture) installed on a Dell
Optiplex 330 with 2GB of RAM and built in Intel video: Intel Corporation
82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:29c2] (rev 0a).
(I'll attach the output of "lspci -vvnn" to provide full device
details.)
For reasons having nothing to do with this bug, I have disabled GDM and
login at the text prompt, then running startx.
At unpredictable intervals, there is a problem when the system comes out
of the screen saver. In fact, it can't quite exit the screen saver.
I've seen this with two different screen savers selected. Currently I
run with just a blank screen and password locking.
More specifically, on moving the mouse or pressing a key, I briefly see
the password login dialog window appear (for less than a second) then
the screen goes black. I cannot get X to let me enter my password.
(Alternately perhaps can do so against the black screen, but if I
managed it successfully it doesn't resolve the problem.)
ssh will still let me in and I can look around. The system is idle and
looks normal to me from that vantage point. I see no spinning processes
that eat CPU, etc.
Exactly what else I can and cannot do varies...
Sometimes I can use Ctrl-Alt-F# to switch to a tty and login. Sometimes
that won't work. If it does work, sometimes switching back to the X
screen afterwards will resolve the problem. Sometimes, even if the
switch works, switching back will not resolve the problem, and I am
still left with a black screen under X.
Assuming that the above did not resolve the problem, things get ugly.
On one occasion I managed to use Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to exit X. Then I
restarted it and things were fine. On other occasions that has not
worked. I have also tried killing the screen saver related processes,
but that didn't fix things. This morning I tried that and got back to
the X desktop, but no panels appeared, and my running windows were
present but lacked content and were unresponsive. From that state Ctrl-
Alt-Backspace through things into a pit. The screen became a mess of
random pixels and I could not switch to a different tty. I used ssh to
get in and reboot.
This problem sometimes goes several days without reappearing, and
sometimes it will happen multiple times in a single day. I have found
no pattern to it.
My own suspicion is that this and but 282081 are actually different
manifestations of the same underlying problem, but I could easily be
wrong.
I am attaching 3 files:
* output of "lspc -vvnn"
* contents of Xorg.0.log just before I issued the reboot command this morning.
* contents of Xorg.0.log after the reboot completed
I'm not an expert at this, but if there are other things I can provide
to help resolve the issue, please ask. I'll try.
I would call this an extremely serious bug. I hope someone can resolve
it quickly.
