Same problem here. Surprisingly I am having this issue ONLY with ubuntu64 8.10. I can install without problem ubuntu32 8.10 and Kubuntu64 8.10.
I checked the iso with md5 and verified the burning process. So, no idea where the problem could be... I don't want to use the option all_generic_ide since noone yet explained if it degrades performance. So, for now I am sticking to Kubuntu64.
