I can confirm this bug in Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid.

$ps -eaf | grep scim

martin 5829 5773 0 10:58 ? 00:00:00 [scim] <defunct>
martin 5860 1 0 10:58 ? 00:00:02 /usr/lib/scim-1.0/scim-launcher
-d -c simple -e all -f socket --no-stay
martin 5916 1 0 10:58 ? 00:00:00
/usr/lib/scim-1.0/scim-helper-manager
martin 5917 1 0 10:58 ? 00:00:30
/usr/lib/scim-1.0/scim-panel-gtk --display :0.0 -c socket -d --no-stay
martin 5919 1 0 10:58 ? 00:00:02 /usr/lib/scim-1.0/scim-launcher
-d -c socket -e socket -f x11
martin 6012 1 0 10:58 ? 00:00:06 scim-bridge

I cannot say what the effects of the defunct scim are, but my keyboard
certainly behaves strange sometimes. With some apps, I suddenly cannot
type anything anymore with the keyboard. Sometimes Alt+Tab helps,
somtimes I need to restart the app. I'm new to Linux so I haven't found
out more, yet.
