While upgrading is always recommended, I was simply curious if you could reproduce your issue on an Ubuntu 8.10 LIVE CD. If you can't create a CD (broke drive) then you might want to look into creating a bootable USB drive. All you will need is the Ubuntu 8.10 iso that you can download, a 1GB USB drive and then just follow the steps in System -> Administration -> Create a USB startup disk
