Public bug reported:
Network Manager refuses to accept a static configuration for wired
connections in Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Xubuntu to name a few. After
fiddling with it a few times it will finally save a static config
without "magically" discarding it. Even then it won't update the
interface if it's already accepted a DHCP IP. You have to take the
connection down "ifconfig eth0 down" and back up. Further, if you
specify DNS and gateway settings it will not place them in resolv.conf
or in the route table "netstat -r" respectively. Then if you reboot the
Network Manager will more often than not, completely discard your static
configuration.
Static wired connections are among the most simple. I can't believe that
Network Manager wouldn't be able to accept a static config "out of the
box". Am I missing something or what? I'm running 8.10. With all the
latest updates as of 1/11/09.
