The menus get an input grab on the X server, and take all keyboard
input.

Unfortuantely, on some laptops these various special-function buttons
are implemented as returning keyboard scan-codes, which are probably
also grabbed by the application presenting the menu.

This said, on Jaunty, and using the "hotkey-setup" package to process
events for my laptop's brightness up/down keycodes, I'm discovering that
they do still work whilst menus are open.
