I decided to go with option 1 - install the .debs for the newer version of the intel xorg driver.
I downloaded and installed: xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.5.1-1ubuntu5~intrepid_i386.deb libdrm-intel1_2.4.1-0ubuntu7~intrepid_i386.deb libdrm2_2.4.1-0ubuntu7~intrepid_i386.deb I can confirm that the newer versions of the intel graphics driver fix the screen resolution problem on my system.
