I'm on the Jaunty kernel Version: 2.6.28-4.10, and this last upgrade just broke ACPI backlight control on my EliteBook 8530w, which happens not to have any "vendor" module for backlight control. The /sys/class/backlight dir is now empty. Interestingly enough, I also have another laptop where the "video" module works, but gives only 3 brightness levels... but the toshiba_acpi module (in the kernels that happen to have it -- see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/261318 -- gives 5 or 7 or so. It seems like we should not blacklist the _BCM and _BCL modules entirely; we should instead prefer vendor drivers over the video module -- exactly the reverse of the way the upstream kernel seems to be going.
