I am using hardy 8.04. Here is what the man page says, which agrees with
the observed behavior and is in fact what would be expected from a tool
like zenity:
DESCRIPTION
zenity is a program that will display GTK+ dialogs, and return (either
in the return code, or on standard output) the users input. This allows
you to present information, and ask for information from the user, from
all manner of shell scripts.
The attached screenshot is from the gui help browser. The circled error
is repeated at several points in the document.
