Very quickly:

I'm running an EEE 900 on Ubuntu 8.10 with "Adamm's kernel". I can only
see the nm-applet if I give the password to the keyring when GNOME
loads. If my home wireless isn't in range, it won't ask me for the keys.
Thus, unless I'm at home I can't connect.

I don't think this is like the other nm-applet disappearances... it's
not crashing.
