Yes ... the log suggests a fontconfig or pango issue, but it was not completely clear to me that this was the issue that led to the gdmgreeter/gdmlogin problem. As far as I can tell, the only application that is not working is gdm, so it seems that pango and fontconfig must be OK at some level.
I purged everything related to pango, fontconfig, and gdm, and then reinstalled all of them. This did not help. I don't have anything installed in /usr/local/, and the only packages flagged as "Obsolete and Locally Created" by aptitude is libtext- shellwords-perl. As far as I can tell, I have no packages installed from outside of the standard Ubuntu repositories that have any relationship to fonts or gdm. -- gdm fails to launch gdmgreeter and gdmlogin https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/316101 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
