As an after thought, I had a quick look around on vlc's site, I found out 
there's a feature in vlc to disable the screensaver while playing video. 
Preferences > Video, check the "Advanced options" box and uncheck the "Disable 
screensaver" option.
Everything works fine now.  It's actually a pretty nice feature, if you're 
watching a movie and not wondering why your screensaver isn't working. So the 
answer is...its not a bug, its a feature :-)
