I don't know whether this is relevant, but today I got a different kind of hang - the symptoms on screen were the same, with the whole system becoming unresponsive to mouse or keyboard, and unavailable over the network, shortly after I logged in to the (XFCE) desktop. But in the logs this looks quite different, with many segfaults in udevd earlier during bootup. I find it curious that the point where I was forced to restart the system resembles the point where the Eeek! error tends to occur (see syslog in the attached archive).
I am going to run memtest on this machine again just to be sure, though previous runs have not turned up any RAM errors. ** Attachment added: "2009-01-15 logs with segfaults" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/21254671/segfaults-2009011501.tar.gz -- Hardy and Intrepid freeze with kernel error: "Eeek! page_mapcount(page) went negative!
