Hi Chris This system started out as a standard Ubuntu 8.04RC system which has since been upgraded to 8.10. So the packages I have installed are the standard 'ubuntu-desktop' packages. I checked and I do not in fact have the 'openoffice.org' package installed -- it seems that the standard system doesn't include it.
So the point stands that with a standard install, openoffice is going to see this error. The next thing is that if I install 'openoffice.org' package, I will just end up adding the following, apparently irrelevant, packages: openoffice.org-filter-binfilter openoffice.org-filter-mobiledev openoffice.org-officebean openoffice.org-report-builder-bin openoffice.org-writer2latex I don't see that any of these packages would be providing the missing java dependencies as far as I can see. I note that my default system *does* include openoffice.org-base, which does include a dependency on *some kind of java*, namely default-jre | java-gcj-compat | openjdk-6-jre | sun-java5-jre | sun- java6-jre | java5-runtime So there's no hard dependency anywhere on Sun Java here.
