The workaround suggested by tjaalton works great!
You just need to disable AutoAddDevices in the ServerFlags section of your
xorg.conf and then re-enable the InputDevice sections that the upgrade to
8.10 commented out.
Here's an example ServerFlags section:
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AutoAddDevices" "off"
