There is http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=327025 about a
similar behaviour some years ago, but it has been closed for quite a
long time.

This may be a regression on libc6, or a locale issue, not sure.
Assigning to GLIBC, marking as confirmed.
