To bring you up to date:
After the data loss I reported, I (stupidly) re-installed Ubuntu Jaunty Studio 
on each of two new petitions. 
I am sorry about that. 
I have been running both of my new partitions in hopes that one will misbehave 
again. So far I have not gotten that data loss I reported. However, I just got 
kernel panic on logging onto my first partition, and I have just remembered 
that this also has been happening before. 
(To solve the problem, I just turned the machine off with the button, and 
turned it on again, and the next time it worked.)
Anyway, the partition has not lost any data yet, but I did just experience the 
kernel panic, so I thought I would send you kern.log. There is not yet any 
.xsession.errors file. 
But I will keep trying. and will send you both files as soon as the problem 
recurs, which I am sure it will.
