I am having a similar problem.

I have a P1005 printer, and today it ran out of paper.

Since it ran out of paper I can't print anything.
I have restarted/reconnected the printer several times, and restarted my system.

If I take a look at dmesg it reads like this:
-- connecting the printer:
[ 1940.765398] usb 7-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 10
[ 1940.917937] usb 7-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
[ 1940.921913] usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 10 if 0 alt 0 proto 2 vid
0x03F0 pid 0x3D17
-- trying to print something:
[ 1948.137138] usblp0: removed
[ 1948.251474] type=1503 audit(1232386938.971:31): operation="inode_permission"
requested_mask="::rw" denied_mask="::rw" fsuid=7 name="/dev/tty" pid=9154
profile="/usr/sbin/cupsd"
[ 1948.568545] type=1503 audit(1232386939.291:32): operation="inode_permission"
requested_mask="::rw" denied_mask="::rw" fsuid=7 name="/dev/tty" pid=9159
profile="/usr/sbin/cupsd"

(I've cut nothing out, just commented at which point in time it says
usblp0 removed).

Before I try printing I can see /dev/usblp0 is a symlink to
/dev/usb/lp0, but after I try printing, and I see the above message in
my dmesg, the /dev/usblp0 is gone.

I am using Intrepid Ibex, and I got the driver from "the database", but it's
reported as:
"HP LaserJet P1005 Foomatic/foo2xqx (recommended)"

I have also tried to encode PS files using the foo2xqx-wrapper, and
cat/cp them to the printer via /dev/usb/lp0, and it doesn't respond to
that.

I'm sorry I won't be able to debug or test any suggestions for 6-7
weeks, since I'm going on a working trip until the 8th of january (and I
*really* needed to print some things before leaving!).

Hope this helps, and shows that this is still a bug for some people (me
at least).

Best,
Steinn E. Sigurðarson
