THIS IS MY SOLUTION PLEASE READ

For my colorado direct I loaded primaxscan on Synaptic.

Next I went to Terminal and did something naughty, I entered

sudo xsane

you get the following message: (See atachment)

Click on "Continue at your own risk"

it then finds the scanner and works perfectly.

One drawback, the file belongs to root so you have to load gimp in the
Terminal ( sudo gimp)
