Hi,

this happened on x86-64, a fresh install, using the default kernel  
for that setup.

What I did was a simple "init 1" at the console. X was running at the  
time on another console, but _should_ not have affected the process.  
(e.g. shutting down by shutdown -h now from the exactly the same  
state of things worked). I am only even mentioning X because this was  
running the merry proprietary nvidia driver. (but why this should  
prevent me from entering single user mode is beyond me ...)
