Well, it's been like this for quite a while now and there are no other signs of any kind of instability on the system. And of course as I mentioned, if I use the older kernel it works fine. And, this system can dual-boot Windows and Windows doesn't seem to have any problems with it.
Also, it doesn't have anything to do with overheating I don't believe; I can have it completely powered off and do a cold start and it will still turn itself off after a few minutes, every single time. It really seems unlikely to me to be a hardware problem, given the above facts.
