geekfreak.  thank you  for your efforts in documenting a fix.  I have it
ready for the next time and it sounds much easier!  I have not had as
many issues as long as I don't copy from one screen and paste to the
other.  I try to limit the carrying any data across screens  and it has
helped a lot as well.

When implementing geekfreak's idea on my machine I came across an issue
that I have not paid much attention to in the past but this could be
linked.

When typing 'gconf-editor' in terminal, it opens fine, however I get an error 
in terminal as follows:
Xlib:  extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0".

This can also be duplicated with xrandr -v.

Google searches show this is a common error when upgrading from 8.04 to
8.10.  In fact the first computer I tried 8.10 on, failed to install due
to the RANDR extension.  This computer is freshly installed but has the
same file issue apparently.

Does anyone else have the same issue, or think it could be linked to
this issue?
