Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: hal
Using Ubuntu 8.10
Kernel: (This kernel is installed from Jaunty repos because I am testing out
ext4 support)
Linux rand 2.6.28-4-generic #5-Ubuntu SMP Fri Dec 26 22:48:55 UTC 2008 x86_64
GNU/Linux
hal:
Installed: 0.5.11-4ubuntu4
Candidate: 0.5.11-4ubuntu4
Version table:
*** 0.5.11-4ubuntu4 0
500 http://mirror.anl.gov intrepid/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
The crash happened immediately after inserting the DVD (ps -Afww shows
that hald-addon-storage is polling every 2 seconds)
All processes owned by me died, and most every root process except for a
few services and init. The whole machine did not crash, just kicked me
into a console where I could run /etc/init.d/kdm restart
I am fairly certain hald-addon-storage triggered the bug because it was the
first process on the oom list. But it is possible that this is a kernel bug
instead.
I do not know if this bug is reproducable because I was not able to get
hald-addon-storage to restart (doing a /etc/init.d/hal restart did not do
anything). What I do know is that after restarting X11, hald was not running,
and I was able to successfully insert and watch the DVD (I even tried taking it
in and out repeatedly)
Unfortunately the DVD was a rental so I was not able to keep it, however
I will continue to try other dvds in that same drive under high memory
load to see if I can trigger a similar crash.
I'm sorry for the sparse information here. Should this be reported has a
hald bug or a kernel bug?
