Well, I believe you are right in the sense that if the folder to which you are downloading the video is currently open/visible, the thumbnailer tries to update the thumbnail and go crazy. Therefore if you are downloading to a folder which is not visible, the problem will probably not occur. As a result, if you always remember to download into some folder which is not open now, you should not face this issue.
