I solved my problem!!! - don't know whether this will solve yours... My /var partition was full. CUPS uses /var during its filtering process (/var/spool??). Since it couldn't write to the directory, printing failed!
It turns out that my backup utility filled up the partition without me realising. I had incorrect settings on the utility meaning I was backing up more than I had intended.
