same problem here, with Xorg eating 100% of one of the cores
killing both gnome-settings-daemon and gnome-power-manager didn't made any
difference
2.6.28-4-server, nvidia 177.82, gnome 2.25.5 (Asus G70)
Still investigating the cause.
