Hi Danny, You're a superstar! By coincidence the friend, and owner of laptop, was visiting this evening and we had a shot at it. It worked first time :-)
I've never seen the sony-assamd option listed anywhere, but it clearly does work. It's up to the developers to decide whether this remains a bug or not. The software is working, but the installer failed to detect the correct options. I can't redo the install on his laptop, and I don't have access to any other Sony VGN-NR32M laptops. I'm happy for the bug to be closed if others think so too.
