Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-driver-vesa
While investigating bug # 294899, on both intrepid and a development
version of jaunty, I typically booted a desktop live CD into text mode,
selecting the vesa driver, then, after possibly changing the xorg.conf
file (or not) I occasionally found that strange resolution selections
appeared, including one which displayed a 0 Hz refresh rate in the
Monitor Resolution Settings dialog.
This computer is a gBox P4 with an S3 Inc. VT8375 [ProSavage8
KM266/KL266] display controller. It is attached to a Samsung SyncMaster
570S TFT 15" flat panel display.
Steps to reproduce:
Boot the desktop CD.
Select English
Press F4 and select "failsafe graphics" mode (which selects the VESA driver)
Press F6 to get a boot command line near the bottom of the screen.
backspace at the end of the command line to eliminate a splash command,
then type "text" there.
For logging -
Possibly add 'Option "ModeDebug" "true"' to the device section of xorg.conf
create a mount point for one of your partitions, and create a directory for
saving
log files etc. set up ALT-F1 and ALT-F2 consoles and sudo su - in both to
become
root, then create a script like this:
#! /bin/bash
sleep 60
cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log .
sync
type alt-F2 and execute the script, then immediately type alt-F2 and run startx
to start
the X server.
For Intrepid:
In my case, the system started trying screen mode - at one point the
Samsung display showed a popup indicating an incompatible screen mode -
but finally it entered an 848x600 mode and filled in the screen
background and panels, quite normally.
Bring up the Monitor Resolution Settings dialog and the following
possible resolutions are shown:
848x600 61 Hz
800x600 61 Hz
848x480 0 Hz <=== the bug!
640x480 60 Hz
I am attaching the resulting /var/log/Xorg.0.log file. I will repeat
this using 9.04 jaunty.
I did not put the Option "ModeDebug" "true" line in xorg.conf this time.
