I repeated the same steps, booting the development version of Jaunty this time.
The results were identical, including the 848x480 mode with 0 Hz refresh. I neither case did I actually try to use that mode! I only tried the 848x600 and 800x60 modes, in fact. I did put the Option "ModeDebug" "true" line in xorg.conf this time.
