If the systems hang/restart without OOo loaded it definitely couldn't be
caused by OOo, as OOo doesn't change anything else in the system. Also
spontaneous reboots generally only happen due to bad hardware. Did all
you do was update to the ppa openoffice.org or some other updates too
(such as a different kernel)?

The hangs and freezes you were experiencing before updating to the newer
OOo combined with the fact the machines now reboot spontaneously (when
no one else has been reporting this issue) seem to indicate you probably
have bad hardware.

You may want to run memtest that comes on the Hardy install cd, just
boot off of it and select it at the first screen.
