Bah, that's so utterly confusing now. Does arecord work or fail if you stop hal and run "tail -f /proc/asound/card*/pcm*/info /proc/asound/cards" in parallel? That's the *only* thing that hal does wrt. sound devices.
If you say that it is fixed in intrepid, trying the intrepid kernel would really be worthwhile, too.
