I have a similar problem in Jaunty Alpha 3. After today's update (23 Jan
in Eastern Canada) my login appears to be normal, but switches from the
normal background to one made of very thin blue and red stripes, then
returns me to the login. This happens repeatedly and I have not been
able to login.
As Alpha version, it's installed on a partition and I am able to run
Intrepid on the main partition. I have appended my Xorg.0.log file.
