Running Ubuntu 8.10 beta on a Toshiba Portege M600 with an acer AL23416W
monitor and an Intel GMA 950 graphics driver...

My preferred configuration is to close the laptop lid and use the
external monitor as a single display. This was possible in Hardy, but is
  not possible in Intrepid.

Using gnome-display-properties I am able to choose between mirrored or
split screens. Split screen is not what I want, but if I choose
mirrored, the display of the monitor is constrained to the low
  resolution of the laptop display.

I need to be able to select a high resolution on the monitor without
splitting the screen or concerning myself with what is rendered on the
  laptop.
