I've added a script that can tell me as much information about my battery as the gnome app. It's a bit messy, yes, but I commented it so I think most can understand it. The only thing that would have to be calibrated is the maximum charge for the battery, but the gnome applet could watch to see what the mWh value is when the battery state is "charged".
