i have tried with live cd 20090125 which has mesa 7.3~rc3-1ubuntu2.
If i let it boot normally it x crashes as gnome is starting, dmesg has the same
messages as before.
however if i start a failsafe terminal i can do a few things before it crashes.

1) start compiz
2) move the xterm around
3) start gnome-panel
4) play with nice fade-in menus
5) start gnome-settings-daemon (the changes window title bars from blue to
orange)
6) wait a few seconds
crash
