It seems that if the '-O3' switch is used, then the compiler does not honor the '-D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=0' flag. I need to investigate that more.
I rebuilt gpac 0.4.5 with gcc options -01 -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=0. MP4Box is now working on my machine. I can import aac files with out error. I uploaded my slightly modified gpac 0.4.5 to my ppa.
