I opened this bug almost 2 years ago, and I see that the ati driver now works with 3d on my G5. Bug almost closed.
In fact, it may have worked for a long time now. But I didn't know. The last comments did let me find a solution. I didn't have X11 crash at startup with Feisty and Gutsy, but a blank screen, my BenQ monitor saying "no signal". I tried these days to tweak xorg.conf with "monitor-DVI-0" or "monitor- DVI-1". And it didn't work : still blank screen. And then I plugged my monitor in the other inlet of my video-card. And voilà ! It works with the Jaunty PPC liveCD from these days. And with Debian Lenny too. So there's still a bug : I didn't encounter any problems for years with OSX and I was lacking 3D for years with linux and Ubuntu JUST BECAUSE MY MONITOR WAS PLUGGED "IN THE OTHER INLET" of my card. It's now plugged in what seems to be : monitor-DVI-0. I don't know if I can use both inlets with dual screens. I have only one. PS : now that liveCDs work on PPC , I my consider go back to Ubuntu one day : I couldn't even install Intrepid and put Lenny (along with Gutsy and osX) on my Mac.
