Another additional note:
desktop-effects are working well (eg. the "wobble effect" when moving windows). 
But sometimes they seem to fail, the wobble-effect etc. is gone. But that 
failure is independent to the other problems (google earth unusable, totem 
crashes).

Isn't there a test, if the 3d-drivers are working well or something like that? 
I'm thinking of something like:

- OpenGL: Warning, runs by software-emulation and is most probably slow
- foo: Excelent, runs by hardware
- bar: Error, does'nt work

I would be glad to at least know where to begin solving my problem, so
any help is very much appreciated :-)
