Hi Bryce Thank you for your time on this issue. I admittedly did not understand your previous suggestions as I am new to Ubuntu / Linux and need fairly direct step by step instructions.
I have however kept the notebook updated with all possible updates to 8.10 but the color resolution remains at 16 colors - also "visual effects" will not change from "none". I have run Ubuntu 8.10 on a more modern Acer Aspire 5920 notebook and it behaves properly. It may be that the older model is not compatible with 8.10 - but it works fine with 8.04. Again, thanks for your efforts; I appreciate that some computers may not accommodate progressing releases. Ubuntu 8.04 is still an excellent OS. Status in “xorg” source package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: Plugging a standard monitor into the notebook and rebooting allows full color on both notebook screen and external monitor. Removing the external monitor - the notebook screen is OK. Rebooting the notebook returns 16 colors (or it appears this way). System -> preferences -> screen resolution reports "unknown screen". "Detect monitors" does nothing. "Help" does nothing. All current updates have been applied. The notebook is an Acer Aspire 3003WLMi - Ubuntu 8.04 worked perfectly.
