Further experiments.

I have removed by sun-java6-jre package and installed default-jre, using
Synaptic. This did not fix the problem. When running ooffice from the
command line, I get this output:

(soffice:17375): Gtk-WARNING **: GtkSpinButton: setting an adjustment
with non-zero page size is deprecated
libgcj failure: gcj linkage error.
Incorrect library ABI version detected. Aborting.

I think that if you want to reproduce this, you will probably have to
install Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, then install sub-java6-jre, then use openoffice
to do something, then upgrade the system to Ubuntu 8.10.

Given that there will be many 8.04 LTS users still yet to upgrade, it is
plausible that this bug might be worth investigating.

If sun-java6-jre is not supported, then perhaps it shouldn't be listed
as an acceptible alternative JRE?

Where to from here?
