There was 2 xorg-video-intel updates last week, and I think all my
problems were solved! (Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid)

I can't remember what those updates did, but one of them was about
textures (they would allow an option in Xorg.conf file to disable
something about textures.. they thought that problem was solved since
Ubuntu 8.04 and the default option was made permanent... but they went
back in that decision and made it possible to disable that function...
that's what i remember).

I can't reproduce the problem anymore, and it didn't happen by itself in
the last 7 days either.

Now I can:
- enable any Compiz Effects i want,
- use any screensaver (not only blank screen) and
- watch videos in fullscreen on any player

The "blinking" problem when pressing ALT+TAB (explained in my last
comment) continues, but that doesn't bother me.

Good luck for every one!

and nothing more.
