I now run:
   Ubuntu 8.10 i386

I get audio with the Asus P5B motherboard.

In the Gnome Menu, the Sound control panel ("System / Preferences /
Sound") offers a test button. I tested playback that way.

The working audio modules are:
"HDA Intel AD198x Digital ALSA (Not Connected)".
"ALSA - Advanced Linux Sound Arquitecture"
"ESD - Enlighteend Sound Daemon"
"PulseAudio Sound Server" (Playback test sound wiith glitches)

(New bugs will be filed later when I install and test a fresh copy of
Ubuntu 9.04a3.)

The following audio modules don't work.
HDA Intel AD198x Analog (ALSA)
HDA Intel AD198x Digital (ALSA)
HDA Intel AD198x Analog (OSS)
HDA Intel AD198x Digital (OSS)
OSS - Open Sound System
Conexant CX8811 OSS PCM Device (OSS) (Video tuner Hauppauge HRV-1300)
USB Device 0x46... OSS PCM Device (OSS) (Labtec Webcam)

OSS displays this error message:
"audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample !
gconfaudiosink profile=chat: Could not open audio device for playback. Device
is being used by another application."
