Looking at other bug reports, this appears to be a Linux bug. See bug # 109211.
I've experienced this bug as well. I've connected three different DVD reader/writers, two Sonys and a Targa to an IBM ThinkPad X60s and a Sony Viao via USB. None of these worked - they behaved as described above. However, I connected an HP DVD1040 Lightscribe to the IBM X60s which has worked flawlessly. So there's a hardware dependency.
